Bio
Sue Fagalde Lick is a fourth-generation Portuguese American with roots in Faial and Pico. A writer from the time she could form words, she spent many years working for newspapers in the San Francisco Bay Area before moving to the Oregon Coast and becoming a fulltime writer/musician. She earned her MFA in creative nonfiction at Antioch University Los Angeles in 2003 at the age of 51 and has taught writing courses at Oregon Coast and Chemeketa community colleges as well as at conferences and workshops across the country.
While researching her first book, The Iberian Americans, she discovered there wasn't much information about Portuguese Americans in general and even less about Portuguese American women. With her mother, grandmother and great grandmother and the threads that tied herself to them in mind, she wrote Stories Grandma Never Told: Portuguese Women in California. She followed that with a novel, Azorean Dreams, in 2000. Since then, she has published a textbook, Freelancing for Newspapers, and a memoir, Shoes Full of Sand. She is looking forward to publishing her next book, Childless by Marriage, in the near future.
She has published countless articles, as well as essays, poems and short stories, in a variety of newspapers, magazines, literary journals and online publications. In addition to her writing, Sue is a singer-songwriter, accomplished guitarist and so-so piano player. She co-directs the choirs at Sacred Heart Church in Newport, OR. Recently, widowed, she is still redefining her life, but it will always include words and music.
