Bio
José Gouveia is a first-generation Portuguese-American poet, writer, journalist & radio personality who lives, writes and takes to the poetry airwaves on Cape Cod. He has won awards for both his written verse and his performance poetry, and is author of 3 chapbooks: What We Do (Salt Winds Press, 1997; Ginsberg Is Dead (Cape Cod Community College, 2000); and The Slaughter of the Sacred Cow (self-published, 2008). Gouveia has also served as Editor on 3 poetry anthologies, Dancing On Water and Common Roots, Common Ground (both published by Cape Cod Community College, 2002 & 2004, respectively); and Rubber Side Down, the biker poet anthology (Archer Books, LA, 2008).

Honors received include: named Poetry Curator, Cultural Center of Cape Cod, 2009; Editor, Rubber Side Down, nominated for IPPY Award and Benjamin Franklin Award, 2008; nominated for Massachusetts Cultural Council “Community Leadership” Award, 2005; Cambridge Poetry Awards: Poet of the Year award, Best Poetry Venue Award and Best Poetry Event of the Year Award, 2001; Boston Cantab Slam Champion, 2000; Poet-In-Resident, Cape Cod Community College, 1999-2001; Cape Cod Spoken Word Poet Laureate, 1999; UMass Dartmouth Literary Association Prize for Poetry, 1997; Sarasota Poetry Theatre Prize for Best Oral-tradition poem, 1996; VFW Voice of Democracy award, 1982.
José Gouveia is a three time National Poetry Slam team member, a former Cape Cod Poet Laureate and former Boston Cantab Slam Champion. He is author of the Meter Man poetry column for the Barnstable Patriot newspaper in Hyannis and hosts the Poets Corner poetry radio show out of Provincetown community radio station WOMR-FM and hosts the Poets Corner monthly open mic and is Poetry Curator at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod in South Yarmouth. He holds an MFA in Poetry from New England College.
